Reflections from Certified Public Manager Program Graduate: Alysen Abel

Hello… I’m Alysen Abel with the City of Overland Park, and I am a Senior Civil Engineer.  As you can tell from my title, I am NOT a manager or supervisor.  CPM has taught me that it doesn’t matter what title or position you have, anyone can be a leader within his/her organization.

CPM gave me the opportunity to network with my classmates. Each of them brought their own personality and perspective to the classroom discussion.  We bonded over building helicopters and playing with pool noodles.  I have a better understanding and appreciation for Public Safety workers in Police, Fire and EMS who risk their lives everyday.  I will cherish the memories and our friendships.

I learned how to be a Great Coach from Jonathan.

I learned how to be a Great Communicator from Noel.

I learned how to be a Great Mentor from Charles.

And I learned how to be a Great Leader from Terri.

The most memorable moment in CPM was the Networking Conference in Topeka. This event brought all of the classes together and gave us an opportunity to connect on a personal and professional level.  Everyone enjoyed the Capitol Tour lead by Charles, even the Tour Guides who work at the Capitol Building.  It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience to learn about the History of Kansas.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in CPM. I have been able to incorporate some of the lessons I’ve learned during my time in CPM to make a difference in my organization.  I will continue to look for opportunities to improve efficiencies and refine engineering processes without compromising standards.
